AI Visibility Audit: Mission for AI Search Growth
A complete AI visibility audit framework to measure your presence across Google AI Overviews and conversational AI engines for SEO growth.
The graduation mission — AI visibility audit
You have completed 9 lessons covering the full AI-powered SEO curriculum: how AI changed search, Google AI Overviews, GEO for AI engines, AI keyword research, prompt engineering, AI content quality, bulk production, AI schema generation, and AI reporting. These capabilities define the modern SEO practitioner — someone who uses AI to accelerate every part of the discipline while maintaining the quality standards that make SEO work.
This final lesson is your Stage 10 graduation mission: a comprehensive AI visibility audit that assesses your current presence across all three AI search environments — traditional Google with AI Overviews, Google AI Overview citations, and conversational AI engines. The audit produces a clear picture of your current AI search visibility and a prioritised action plan for improving it.
Most sites are currently invisible in AI search — not because their content is poor, but because they have not optimised for the specific signals AI systems use to select citations. The AI visibility gap between optimised and unoptimised sites will widen rapidly over the next 12–24 months. Auditing and optimising now is a significant competitive advantage.
The complete AI visibility audit framework
Part 1 — Google AI Overview exposure assessment
- ☐ Export your top 50 queries by impressions from GSC → Performance
- ☐ For each query: manually search in Google and note whether an AI Overview appears (test in incognito, signed out of Google, with US location if your market is US)
- ☐ For queries with AI Overviews: record whether your site is cited as a source
- ☐ Calculate: AIO coverage rate (what % of your top queries show AI Overviews), AIO citation rate (what % of those AIOs cite your site)
- ☐ Categorise all AIO-affected queries as: Cited (you appear), Uncited-Eligible (AIO appears but you are not cited), or Commercial (AIO does not appear — less affected)
Part 2 — Conversational AI engine presence
- ☐ Test your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: "What is [brand name]?" — is the description accurate?
- ☐ Test your primary service in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: "What are the best [your service category] tools?" — does your brand appear?
- ☐ Test your top 5 informational content topics in Perplexity: does your content appear as a cited source?
- ☐ Check GA4 for referral traffic from ai engine domains (perplexity.ai, chatgpt.com, you.com)
- ☐ Document: presence score per engine (0 — not mentioned, 1 — mentioned without detail, 2 — prominently featured with link)
Part 3 — Content AIO-readiness assessment
- ☐ For your top 10 informational pages: check whether the first 200 words contain a direct, concise answer to the target query
- ☐ Check whether your top 10 pages have FAQ sections with FAQPage schema
- ☐ Check whether your top 10 pages have question-format H2 headings
- ☐ Check whether all pages have named authorship with verifiable credentials
- ☐ Calculate: AIO-readiness score for each page (out of 4 criteria)
Part 4 — AI content quality assessment
- ☐ Identify all AI-assisted content published on your site in the last 6 months
- ☐ Apply the quality failure checklist from Lesson 130 to a random sample of 5 AI-assisted articles
- ☐ Calculate the proportion of sampled articles with 2+ quality failures — this is your AI content quality risk score
- ☐ Check GSC: are new AI-assisted articles indexing at a lower rate than older, human-written content? (Sign of systematic quality issues)
Scoring your AI visibility
| Area | Score range | Priority action |
|---|---|---|
| AIO citation rate over 25% of eligible queries | Strong | Maintain and expand to new informational content |
| AIO citation rate 10–25% | Moderate | Optimise uncited pages: direct answers, FAQ, question H2s |
| AIO citation rate under 10% | Weak | Systematic content restructuring for AIO eligibility |
| Mentioned in 3+ AI engines | Strong GEO presence | Build earned citations and original data |
| Mentioned in 1–2 AI engines | Emerging GEO presence | Digital PR, comprehensive content, entity schema |
| Not mentioned in any AI engine | No GEO presence | Brand visibility emergency: earned media, Wikipedia presence, authoritative citations |
| AIO-readiness score 3–4/4 on top pages | Strong | Extend same structure to all informational content |
| AIO-readiness score under 2/4 | Needs improvement | Systematic content restructuring starting with highest-traffic pages |
What comes next — Stage 11: SEO Business and Career
You now have complete command of the full modern SEO discipline across 10 stages: foundations, keyword research, on-page, technical, Google tools, content strategy, link building, local SEO, advanced SEO, and AI-powered SEO. Stage 11 covers the business and career skills that transform SEO expertise into a sustainable professional practice: client audits, reporting, pricing, proposals, onboarding, client acquisition, white-label partnerships, team building, scaling from freelancer to agency, personal branding, and career paths. These are the business capabilities that most SEO courses ignore entirely — and the ones that determine whether your SEO skills generate their maximum financial return.
From Page-Level SEO to System-Level AI Visibility
This stage is not just a technical checklist — it is a shift in how you think about SEO as a discipline. Traditional SEO focused on rankings and traffic. AI-powered SEO focuses on visibility inside answers. If you are not being cited, summarised, or referenced by AI systems, you are effectively missing from the new discovery layer of the internet.
The most important mindset shift is this: optimization is no longer page-level — it is system-level. Every part of your content ecosystem now contributes to AI visibility, including structure, entity clarity, semantic depth, and external authority signals. A single well-written article is no longer enough; AI systems evaluate patterns across your entire domain.
