No. RankSpy fetches their public homepage the same way any browser visitor does — there’s nothing to install on their site, no log entry that says “RankSpy was here.” It looks like a normal page view.
They fingerprint tech and stop. We do that, then add keyword intelligence, AI-search readiness, ad creatives, social, backlinks and a priority-scored gap analysis — all in one scan. If you only need tech detection, the free Wappalyzer extension is fine.
Those are deep keyword + backlink databases. We use DataForSEO for that data, so for backlink depth on a giant site Ahrefs/Semrush will be richer. RankSpy is the decision moment — one scan, one screen, the eight things you actually need to size up a specific rival.
Only storefront apps that inject a visible widget — reviews, upsell, loyalty, page builders, search, popups, support. Admin-side apps (tax, fulfilment, inventory sync, shipping) run server-side and cannot be detected from outside. We openly label what we cannot see.
Mostly invisible. Headers and cookies sometimes leak the language or framework (PHP, ASP.NET, nginx, Laravel, Rails). The database and most server-side code do not reach the browser and cannot be fingerprinted. The Tech Stack tab separates detectable from inferred from not-detectable.
They’re clearly-labelled models, not measurements. Conversion rate can’t be observed on someone else’s site, so competitor revenue is always a low–high range with editable assumptions. The keyword-gap value uses your own conversion rate and order value, which is the defensible number to take to a client.
As accurate as the data provider — we pass through DataForSEO’s search volumes, positions and difficulties. The intent classification and priority score we layer on top are deterministic logic. None of it is invented.

No. RankSpy reads the same public HTML and headers a regular visitor sees. It doesn’t crawl protected pages, doesn’t bypass auth and respects robots.txt for any optional deeper crawl.
Honest list: we are not a full keyword research suite (Ahrefs/Semrush are better for that); we don’t track rank changes over time (that’s RankTracker in the suite); we don’t do site audits at SEO-tool depth (use RankAudit). RankSpy is competitor intelligence, not all-in-one SEO.
