Working With AI Content

The AI Human Hybrid Workflow From Brief to Published

A step-by-step production pipeline that uses AI at the stages where it's strong and reserves human judgement for the stages where it matters most.

Stage 1-2: brief and research

The brief is entirely human-owned: it defines the target query, the audience, the angle, and any proprietary facts or data to include. AI can assist research by summarising competitor pages and public documentation, but every fact pulled this way needs a human check against the original source before it enters the brief.

A strong brief for AI-assisted writing is more detailed than one for a human writer, because the model has no implicit understanding of your brand voice or audience unless you state it. Budget extra time here - a thin brief is the most common cause of unusable drafts.

Stage 3-4: draft and structural edit

Generate the draft from your brief-fed prompt, then do a structural edit before a line edit: check the argument makes sense, the answer-first pattern is followed under each heading, and no section repeats another. This pass is faster than line editing and catches the bigger problems first, so you're not polishing prose you'll later delete.

Only after structure is sound do you move to line editing - tightening sentences, injecting your own examples and opinions, and removing generic phrasing. This ordering avoids the common trap of perfecting a paragraph that gets cut in the next pass.

Stage 5-6: fact check and publish

Every number, claim, and named source gets verified against a primary reference before publishing - no exceptions, regardless of deadline pressure. Log the editor's name and date in your CMS or a tracking sheet; this record is useful both for quality control and as evidence of a people-first process.

Publish, then feed the URL back into your keyword and AI Overview tracking so you can measure whether the hybrid process is actually producing rankable, citable content - if it isn't after several pieces, revisit which stage is underperforming rather than abandoning the whole approach.

  • 1. Human brief with facts and angle
  • 2. AI-assisted research, human-verified
  • 3. AI draft from templated prompt
  • 4. Human structural edit
  • 5. Human line edit with own examples/opinion
  • 6. Fact check + publish + track

Key takeaways

  • Own the brief and the facts entirely as a human step
  • Structural edit before line edit, always in that order
  • Never publish an unverified factual claim
  • Log who edited each piece for accountability and audit
