Content Design in RankUX — Readability & Microcopy
RankUX's Content Design dimension scores readability, microcopy, and information architecture. Learn how to move from a 47 Flesch score to 60+.
---
Introduction
Content Design is the dimension that connects words and design. A page with great visual hierarchy and a poor reading-level score still fails users who cannot understand it. RankUX measures the dimension with the Flesch Reading Ease score plus microcopy and information-architecture checks. For rankar.ai the dimension scores 83/100 with the explicit flag "Score 47 - too academic, aim for 60+."
The Flesch Score Threshold
The Flesch Reading Ease score ranges from 0-100. Higher is easier to read:
- 90-100 — Very easy. 5th grade level.
- 80-90 — Easy.
- 70-80 — Fairly easy.
- 60-70 — Standard. The target for most B2C content.
- 50-60 — Fairly difficult. Acceptable for technical B2B.
- 30-50 — Difficult. Academic or specialised.
- Below 30 — Very difficult.
RankUX recommends 60+ for general SaaS marketing pages. rankar.ai at 47 sits in the "fairly difficult" band, suggesting the prose reads as academic rather than approachable.
How to Move Flesch 47 → 60
Three techniques compound:
Shorten sentences. Aim for an average sentence length under 17 words. Long sentences with multiple clauses score worst. Use shorter words. Replace 3+ syllable words with shorter alternatives where possible: "utilize" → "use", "implementation" → "rollout", "comprehensive" → "complete". Use active voice. Active voice scores better than passive. "RankUX scores the page" beats "The page is scored by RankUX."These three changes typically lift Flesch by 15-25 points without sacrificing accuracy.
Microcopy Checks
Beyond Flesch, RankUX scores microcopy quality:
- Button labels (clear actions vs vague "Submit").
- Form field labels (descriptive vs generic).
- Error messages (helpful vs blame-y).
- Empty states (encouraging vs jarring).
Most microcopy fixes are single-word changes with outsized impact.
Information Architecture
The third axis measures whether content is grouped and labelled in an obvious way. Section headers, navigation labels, breadcrumbs. RankUX checks the entropy of section names — overly generic headers ("Features" appearing 4 times) score worse.
The Path to 90+
For rankar.ai at 83:
- Flesch fix (47 → 60+): +5-8 points.
- Microcopy polish: +2-4 points.
- IA refinement: +2-3 points.
Total achievable: 90+.
