Stage 1
Setting up the comparison
Stage 2
Reading the gap table
Stage 3
Prioritising the shortlist
Setting up the comparison
Open Gap Analysis and select your domain plus up to five competitor domains already added to the project. The tool pulls every keyword any of these domains rank for and builds a shared table.
Reading the gap table
Each row is a keyword with a column per domain showing its position, or a dash if it does not rank. Use the filter for 'competitor ranks, you do not' to isolate pure gaps, or 'you rank lower than all competitors' to find weak spots worth strengthening.
- Filter: competitor ranks, you don't
- Filter: you rank below every competitor
- Sort by volume to prioritise
Prioritising the shortlist
Sort the filtered gap list by volume and estimated difficulty together — the sweet spot is high volume with moderate difficulty and clear topical relevance to your site.
Exporting for action
Export the shortlist to CSV or push it directly into RankOps as a content task list, keeping volume and target competitor position attached to each row.
Why this matters
Leveraging this gap analysis feature effectively transforms raw data into actionable insights, directly impacting your organic visibility. A well-executed analysis identifies high-value keywords where competitors are succeeding and you are not, pinpointing immediate content and SEO optimisation opportunities. This precise targeting allows you to allocate resources efficiently, avoiding efforts on already-saturated terms or those with low search intent. Conversely, a poorly performed analysis, perhaps due to selecting irrelevant competitors or failing to filter for search intent, can lead to wasted time and resources, creating content that underperforms or fails to attract the desired audience.
Consider a scenario where you're a niche B2B software provider. Using this tool to identify competitor-ranking keywords related to specific industry pain points you already address but don't rank for provides a strategic advantage. You can then develop targeted landing pages or blog posts, directly challenging their market share. Failing to utilise this data means potentially missing out on qualified leads, allowing competitors to dominate crucial search landscapes. This isn't just about traffic; it's about capturing genuine demand that translates into commercial outcomes, making effective gap analysis a cornerstone of competitive strategy.
Refining Competitor Selection for Precision Gap Analysis
The efficacy of your gap analysis hinges critically on the selection of appropriate competitors. It's not merely about choosing the largest players in your sector; rather, it involves identifying entities that are directly vying for the same search intent and target audience for specific product or service lines. Including overly broad competitors can dilute your results with irrelevant keywords, while overlooking emerging rivals might mean missing crucial, niche opportunities. Prioritise competitors who exhibit strong organic visibility for the precise topics you aim to dominate, even if their overall domain authority differs.
To achieve precision, consider several factors beyond just brand recognition. Look for competitors with similar business models, product offerings, or target geographic areas. Utilise third-party tools to assess their keyword profiles and backlink portfolios. A competitor ranking well for commercial intent keywords that align with your conversion goals is far more valuable for this analysis than one predominantly ranking for informational terms outside your immediate strategic focus. This nuanced selection ensures your gap analysis targets truly addressable market opportunities.
- Exclude competitors with fundamentally different business models.
- Prioritise rivals who rank for specific product/service keywords you offer.
- Check competitors' organic traffic for commercial intent before including.
- Review their backlink profile to gauge authority alignment.
Do it now
Navigate back to your current RankTracker gap analysis report. Apply a 'Volume' filter to only display keywords with a minimum of 100 monthly searches to immediately focus on terms with viable traffic potential. This step ensures you're prioritising opportunities that can genuinely move the needle for your organic performance, rather than expending effort on ultra-low-volume terms that may not yield significant returns for your content investment.
- Open your active RankTracker project.
- Go to the 'Gap Analysis' section.
- Locate the 'Volume' filter option.
- Set the minimum volume to '100'.
