Adding competitors
From the Competitors tab, add a domain manually or accept one of the automatic suggestions RankTracker generates from shared SERP appearances. Cap the list at competitors you can realistically act on — five is a practical maximum.
The competitor profile
Clicking a competitor opens a profile showing their visibility trend line next to yours, their top-ranking keywords, and which of your tracked keywords they beat you on. This is the fastest way to size up a specific rival rather than reading the aggregate gap table.
Automatic suggestions
Suggested competitors are ranked by SERP overlap percentage. A high overlap with low brand-name similarity is often a better signal of a true competitor than an obvious industry name that barely overlaps with your keyword set.
Keeping the list current
Review the competitor list quarterly — markets shift, and a competitor who mattered a year ago may no longer be relevant while a newer entrant now is.
Why this matters
Neglecting competitive intelligence within RankTracker leads directly to reactive, rather than proactive, SEO strategies. For instance, if a direct competitor significantly expands their keyword footprint into a new, high-volume product category and you fail to identify this shift promptly, your business risks losing market share. By the time their improved rankings become obvious in SERPs, you've lost valuable months in content production, technical optimisation, and link building required to catch up, impacting revenue streams directly. Consistent monitoring allows for early detection of such strategic moves.
Conversely, diligently utilising RankTracker's competitive features empowers you to anticipate market changes and exploit competitor vulnerabilities. Consider a scenario where a rival's visibility for a core set of transactional keywords shows a consistent downward trend due to site migration issues. Your immediate insight into this allows you to double down on those keywords, enhance your own content, and potentially capture their eroding market share. This proactive approach ensures your SEO investments are always aligned with both market opportunities and competitor weaknesses, delivering a superior ROI.
Identifying Competitor Keyword Gaps
A critical application of RankTracker's competitive intelligence lies in pinpointing keyword gaps where your rivals rank highly, but you do not. This isn't merely about finding keywords; it's about understanding the underlying user intent your competitor is serving effectively, which you are currently missing. This workflow begins by examining high-performing keywords for your competitors where your own visibility is minimal or non-existent, particularly focusing on those with clear commercial intent and sufficient search volume to justify investment. Prioritise these based on their potential impact on your business objectives.
The diagnostic phase involves more than just a keyword list; it requires an analysis of the competitor's content strategy around these terms. Evaluate the content type (e.g., product page, guide, blog post), its depth, and supporting internal/external links. This deeper dive reveals the effort required to compete effectively and helps you formulate a content brief. Overlooking this context risks generating generic content that fails to meet the user's need as effectively as the competitor's, leading to continued low rankings despite targeting the keyword.
- Filter competitor keywords by top positions (e.g., 1-10) and your current ranking (e.g., not ranking).
- Analyse competitor content for identified gap keywords for structure and intent.
- Cross-reference keyword gaps with your existing content inventory for potential optimisations.
- Prioritise gaps by search volume, commercial intent, and perceived competitive difficulty.
Do it now
Begin immediately by identifying your top three direct organic competitors within RankTracker's interface, if you haven't already. Then, navigate to one competitor's profile and identify at least five keywords where they rank in the top 10 positions, but you do not. This hands-on exercise reinforces the practical application of competitive keyword gap analysis and sets the foundation for prioritising future content initiatives.
- Open RankTracker and access the 'Competitors' section.
- Select a primary competitor from your tracked list.
- Go to their 'Keyword Gap' report.
- Filter for keywords where competitor ranks 1-10 and your domain does not rank.
Key takeaways
- ✓Cap tracked competitors at what you can actually act on
