AI Overview tracking
Feature icons in the table
Small icons next to a keyword's position row indicate which SERP features are present — snippet, PAA, image pack, video, shopping or AI Overview. Hover any icon to see who currently owns that feature.
Snippet opportunity view
Filter the rankings table for 'snippet present, you rank 2-5' to find the classic snippet-steal opportunity: you are close enough that a formatting change to your page could capture the feature.
- Filter: snippet present, position 2-5
- Check the snippet's current format (list, table, paragraph)
AI Overview tracking
AI Overviews are tracked as their own feature type, showing whether your domain is cited within the overview even when your traditional ranking position has dropped. This matters increasingly for explaining traffic that does not match position alone.
Acting on feature data
Export the feature-filtered list to a content task so a writer can restructure the specific page rather than guessing which pages might qualify for a snippet.
Why this matters
Neglecting SERP feature tracking in RankTracker means you could be optimising for organic listings when the vast majority of search volume is captured by a Featured Snippet. For instance, if your key term 'best waterproof hiking boots' consistently triggers a Top Stories carousel and a People Also Ask box before any organic links, simply ranking #1 organically may not deliver the expected traffic. Without understanding feature ownership, you might spend resources improving a page's core ranking algorithmically, unaware that the real prize lies in optimising for the snippet itself, or answering related PAA questions.
Conversely, diligently monitoring SERP feature ownership allows you to pivot your content strategy effectively. Imagine tracking a competitor who consistently owns the Featured Snippet for a high-value query. By analysing their content's structure, conciseness, and answer format directly within RankTracker, you gain actionable insights. This enables you to craft a superior, specifically formatted answer designed to unseat them, rather than relying on generic on-page optimisation that ignores the specific feature's requirements. This targeted approach significantly improves your chances of capturing prominent SERP visibility.
Prioritising Snippet Recapture: A Workflow
When identifying a key query where a competitor currently owns a Featured Snippet, your immediate goal should be recapture. Start by filtering your RankTracker project to show queries where you rank on page one (positions 1-10) but do not own the snippet, while a competitor does. Examine the competitor's content directly from the SERP snapshot within RankTracker: note their snippet's length, format (paragraph, list, table), and the directness of the answer provided. This granular analysis is crucial for understanding why their content was chosen over yours, despite your proximity in organic rankings.
Next, review your own page content for the target query. Identify where your page attempts to answer the snippet question. Often, your answer might be buried within a larger block of text, overly verbose, or not structured optimally (e.g., a long paragraph where a concise list is preferred). The objective is to edit your existing content to explicitly and concisely answer the snippet question at or near the top of the relevant section, mirroring the competitor's successful format where applicable. This often involves creating a dedicated H2 or H3 section with a clear, direct answer in the preferred format immediately below it.
- Filter for competitors owning snippets you don't.
- Analyse competitor snippet format and content.
- Identify your page's snippet answer location.
- Refine your page's answer for conciseness and format.
Do it now
Open your primary RankTracker project. Navigate to the 'SERP Features' tab. Apply a filter to display keywords where your domain ranks within the top 5 organic positions but does not own a Featured Snippet, while at least one tracked competitor does. This immediate view highlights your most promising snippet recapture opportunities, allowing for direct comparison and actionable insight into content formatting and targeting.
- Access 'SERP Features' tab in your project.
- Filter for 'Your Rank' < 6.
- Filter for 'Featured Snippet' > 'You don't own it'.
- Filter for 'Featured Snippet' > 'Competitor owns it'.
