Mission Implement Hreflang and Validate It
Apply everything from this track: pick a multi-market URL set, write correct reciprocal hreflang, deploy it, then run a full RankTracker validation crawl and fix every error found.

Choose a site section with at least three market variants (or simulate one on a staging environment). Map every URL to its correct language-region code, including an x-default fallback, and write out the full reciprocal hreflang set for the cluster before touching any code, so you can sanity-check the logic on paper first.
Implement the tags using whichever method suits the site (HTML head, HTTP header, or XML sitemap) and deploy to a URL set you can safely re-crawl. Do not deploy directly to a fully live, high-traffic section without a rollback plan, since a broken hreflang deployment can suppress visibility across the whole cluster while it's live.
Validation and sign-off steps
Run a full crawl of the cluster in RankTracker with hreflang validation enabled, and work through every flagged issue using the eight-error framework from earlier in this track — return tags, ISO codes, canonical conflicts, blocked pages, self-reference, duplicate values, and absolute URLs. Re-crawl after each fix batch rather than fixing everything blind and re-checking once, so you can confirm each fix actually resolved its specific error rather than introducing a new one.
Finish with a manual spot-check using URL Inspection for at least one URL per market to confirm Google's own understanding matches your intended hreflang mapping, and document the final cluster structure so future team members maintain it correctly.
- Map all URLs and codes on paper before implementing
- Deploy to a safely re-crawlable set with a rollback plan
- Run RankTracker hreflang validation and fix all eight error types
- Re-crawl after each fix batch, not only once at the end
- Finish with manual URL Inspection spot-checks per market
Key takeaways
- ✓Plan the full hreflang map before writing any code
- ✓Always have a rollback plan before deploying to live traffic
- ✓Use the eight-error framework as your validation checklist
- ✓Confirm real Google behaviour with URL Inspection, not just crawl output
Why this lesson matters
This lesson belongs to Applied mission, the part of International SEO where the goal is: put hreflang implementation and validation into practice on a real or sample site end to end.
Read it once, then do it straight away on a real site inside RankTracker. Nothing here is theory for its own sake — every step produces something you can show a client.
Do it now
- 1Open RankTracker with sample data already loaded, so you are not stuck on setup.
- 2Track the keywords from this lesson.
- 3Complete the mission inside RankTracker by implementing hreflang across a market set and running a full validation crawl before marking it done.
