The Keyword Strategy Engine: Your Launch Keyword Map: Running the engine to Funnel stage tagging to Exporting the map.

Running the engine

From a shortlisted niche, click Build Keyword Strategy to generate a map of pillar, supporting and long-tail keywords, pulled from search data and clustered automatically.

The engine returns results in a tree view: pillar topics at the top level, supporting subtopics beneath, and individual keyword targets as leaves.

Funnel stage tagging

Every keyword is auto-tagged as top, middle or bottom of funnel based on its intent signals, shown as a coloured chip next to the term.

Re-tag any keyword manually if the automatic classification looks wrong for your specific angle on the niche — this feeds directly into the site structure suggestion later.

Exporting the map

Use Export to CSV for spreadsheet planning, or Send to RankWriter to push the pillar and supporting topics straight into a content brief queue in one click.

The tree structure is preserved in both exports, so whoever builds the site map or content calendar next inherits the hierarchy rather than a flat list.

  • Pillar topics
  • Supporting subtopics
  • Long-tail leaves
  • Funnel-stage tags

Why this matters

Neglecting to stress-test a shortlisted niche effectively with RankLaunch's competitor and keyword data can lead to significant resource misallocation. For instance, if you proceed with a niche based solely on perceived demand, only to discover later that the competitive landscape is dominated by deeply entrenched, high-authority domains targeting your primary terms, your content efforts will likely struggle for visibility. This oversight means investing heavily in content that stands little chance of ranking, wasting budget, time, and team morale on an uphill battle that could have been avoided with early validation.

Conversely, diligently utilising this feature allows you to identify underserved sub-niches or long-tail opportunities where your new site can gain traction more readily. Imagine identifying a significant volume of relevant, buyer-intent keywords that your top competitors are either neglecting or underperforming on. This data empowers you to strategically prioritise content creation for these terms, ensuring your initial content efforts are directed towards achievable wins. Such a data-driven approach builds early organic traffic and authority, providing a solid foundation for future expansion into more competitive territory.

Identifying Keyword Gaps & Competitive Weaknesses

Effectively leveraging RankLaunch's competitive analysis extends beyond merely identifying your adversaries; it's about uncovering their strategic weaknesses. This involves scrutinising their top-performing keywords where their content or SERP features are suboptimal – perhaps thin content, poor user experience, or an absence of desired rich snippets. A competitor might rank for a high-volume transactional term, but their landing page is informational, creating a clear opportunity for a commercially focused, high-converting alternative from your end. This diagnostic approach allows you to pinpoint actionable keyword gaps.

Furthermore, look for topics and keyword clusters where competitors have limited depth or breadth of coverage. They might have a single, broad article when the user intent clearly demands several in-depth, specific pieces. This lack of topical authority in specific areas presents an immediate strategic advantage. By mapping these gaps against your own unique value proposition and expertise, you can craft content that not only ranks but also outperforms the established players by better meeting user needs and search intent, establishing your site as the definitive resource.

  • Analyse competitor top pages for keyword intent mismatch.
  • Identify competitor low-quality content ranking for high-value terms.
  • Spot keywords where competitors lack comprehensive topic coverage.
  • Note SERP features competitors are missing for relevant queries.

Do it now

Within RankLaunch, navigate to the 'Competitor Analysis' module. Select your primary and secondary competitor set, ensuring they are direct rivals targeting the same user intent. Initiate the 'Keyword Gap Analysis' report to swiftly identify areas where your competitors are ranking, but your site (or planned site) currently is not, providing a tangible list of immediate content opportunities.

  • Open the 'Market Validation' section in RankLaunch.
  • Input your primary seed keywords for your shortlisted niche.
  • Add 3-5 direct competitors relevant to your niche's core offering.
  • Execute the 'Competitive Keyword Overlap' report to visualise shared and unique keywords.

Key takeaways

  • Let the engine build the first draft of the keyword tree, then correct funnel tags by hand
  • Push the pillar structure into RankWriter rather than rebuilding it there
  • Keep the tree hierarchy intact through export so downstream planning is not flattened
