Working With AI Content

Optimising for AI Overviews the New Position Zero

Concrete on-page changes that increase the odds of being cited in an AI Overview, drawn from how the retrieval-and-synthesis system selects sources.

Answer first, explain second

The single highest-leverage change is structural: state the direct answer to the implied question within the first one or two sentences after the relevant heading, then use the following paragraphs to explain, qualify, or add nuance. This mirrors how the synthesis model extracts a citable claim - it favours a clean, quotable sentence over one buried in a long introduction.

Use a heading that matches the actual question a user would type or think, not a clever or branded heading. 'How much does X cost' outperforms 'Pricing Breakdown' for citation purposes because it matches query phrasing more closely.

Structure that machines can parse

Ordered and unordered lists, definition-style paragraphs, and tables all extract more cleanly than prose. If you're comparing three options, a table with consistent columns is far more likely to be lifted into an AI Overview than the same information described in a paragraph, because the model doesn't have to infer structure - it's already there.

Keep answer paragraphs self-contained. A sentence that only makes sense in the context of the previous three paragraphs is hard to extract cleanly and gets skipped in favour of a competitor's self-contained version.

  • Lead with a direct-answer sentence under every H2/H3
  • Use tables for any comparison of 3+ items or attributes
  • Write each key paragraph so it stands alone out of context
  • Match headings to real query phrasing, not marketing language

Tracking citations in RankAIO

Run your priority query list through RankAIO's AI Overview monitor to see, per query, whether an overview appears and which domains it cites. Filter to queries where you rank organically but aren't cited - these are your highest-priority rewrite candidates, since you've already proven relevance and just need to restructure for extraction.

Re-check monthly. AI Overview citation sets rotate more than organic rankings, so a page can move in and out of citation without any change on your end - track the trend, not any single snapshot.

Key takeaways

  • Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading
  • Convert comparisons into tables wherever possible
  • Write self-contained paragraphs that don't rely on prior context
  • Use RankAIO to find pages that rank but aren't cited, and rewrite those first
