Competitor Keyword Gap Analysis Steal What's Working

How to find the keywords your competitors rank for that you don't, prioritise the gaps worth closing, and avoid the trap of copying a rival's entire content strategy.

Why competitor gaps are a shortcut

If a competitor already ranks for a term, Google has already proven that a page like theirs can satisfy that query — you are not guessing whether the topic is winnable, you are confirming it. Gap analysis removes a huge amount of uncertainty from keyword selection because the validation work has effectively already been done by someone else's content programme.

Choose competitors carefully: pick two or three sites genuinely similar in size and authority to yours, not the market leader with ten times your backlink profile, or every gap will look unrealistically hard to close.

Running the gap report

Export the full ranking keyword list for each competitor and for your own site, then filter for terms where a competitor ranks in the top twenty and you rank beyond position fifty or not at all. This produces the raw gap list — the terms genuinely available to be closed rather than ones you're already contesting.

Segment the gap list by intent and volume immediately, because a gap report on its own is just a spreadsheet of opportunity with no prioritisation logic attached.

Separating real opportunity from noise

Not every gap is worth closing. Ignore branded terms containing a competitor's company name, terms clearly tied to a feature or product you don't offer, and terms where the competitor's ranking page is a huge cornerstone asset built over years — those aren't realistic near-term wins.

  • Discard: competitor brand-name queries
  • Discard: terms tied to features you don't sell
  • Prioritise: terms with KD below your current site average
  • Prioritise: terms where competitor's ranking page is thin or outdated
  • Flag for later: high-volume gaps behind a major cornerstone asset

Running this analysis in RankTracker

Use RankTracker's competitor comparison view to enter up to several rival domains alongside your own and generate a shared-vs-gap matrix automatically. Save the resulting gap list as a tracked keyword group so you can monitor, week over week, how many of those gap terms you've started to close as new content goes live.

Key takeaways

  • Pick competitors matched to your actual size and authority
  • Filter for terms they rank for and you don't, then prioritise by winnability
  • Discard branded and off-offering terms from the gap list
  • Track gap closure over time as a programme metric, not a one-off report
