Join the AcademyStep 1: crawl and triage
Spend the first five minutes selecting two or three important pages and checking their responses and visible content. Start an available RankAudit check if you have authorised access, but do not wait indefinitely for a large crawl. A twenty-minute triage is a first pass, not a promise to finish a full-site crawl or uncover every issue.
Resist the urge to fix everything in one sitting; note the top five issues by estimated impact and work through them in order.
Step 2: check indexing status
Spend the next five minutes reviewing the Page indexing report and URL Inspection in Search Console if you have access. An excluded URL is not automatically an error: redirects, duplicates and deliberately non-indexed pages may be expected. Compare the reported reason with the page's intended purpose before proposing a fix.
Pay particular attention to any important page — a key service or product page — that shows as 'Discovered, not indexed' or 'Crawled, not indexed', since these are actively losing potential traffic.
- Check a small set of important URLs; schedule a full crawl separately
- Sort issues by severity, not count
- Compare against Search Console's indexing report
- List your top 5 highest-impact fixes
- Re-crawl after fixes to confirm resolution
Step 3: spot-check the essentials
In the twenty-minute version, manually verify a handful of essentials on your two or three most important pages: unique title tags, a single H1, working internal links, HTTPS, and a fast load time on mobile. These five checks catch a disproportionate share of real-world problems in a fraction of the time a full manual audit would take.
If any of these fail on a page that matters commercially, treat it as urgent — these are foundational, not optional, elements.
Building the habit
Use the final five minutes to record each finding's URL, evidence, importance, owner and retest. Keep the original report or screenshot where available and compare the same check after the fix. A changed audit score alone does not prove a ranking or revenue gain.
Set a recurring reminder to re-audit — sites drift out of good health through CMS updates, plugin changes and content added without review, even without anyone doing anything obviously wrong.
Why this lesson matters
A focused first pass helps reveal obvious blockers on important pages without claiming to be a complete assessment. A large crawl may take longer than twenty minutes, and some checks need property access or specialist tools. Record unavailable evidence rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
A practical twenty-minute schedule
Use five minutes to choose important URLs and check responses, five for indexing evidence, five for page essentials and five for recording next actions. Adapt this schedule if a check is unavailable; it is a working plan, not a guarantee of completion or impact.
Do it now
Apply this lesson on content you own or are authorised to assess.
- Choose two or three important URLs on an authorised site.
- Check available RankAudit findings and verify them on the affected pages.
- Inspect indexing in Search Console if you have access; otherwise record it as unverified.
- Save URL, finding, evidence, priority, owner and retest for each proposed fix.
Key takeaways
- Triage crawl issues by severity, not raw count
- Compare crawled pages against Search Console's indexed pages
- Manually verify titles, H1s, links, HTTPS and speed on key pages
- Re-audit monthly and track the trend, not just a single score
Practise it now in RankAudit
Use RankAudit's E-E-A-T and entity coverage checks against one of your existing pages and note the gaps it surfaces.
