Earning Links Through Assets

The Skyscraper Technique Build the Definitively Best Resourc

The skyscraper technique earns links by finding an already-popular resource, deliberately outbuilding it, then redirecting its existing linkers to your superior version.

Finding a worthy target to outbuild

Search for existing content in your niche that already attracts a healthy number of referring domains, using RankLinks to check the backlink count of top-ranking pages for your target keyword. The ideal target is popular enough to prove demand for the topic but weak enough on execution that a genuinely better version is achievable: outdated statistics, thin coverage, or poor formatting are all signs of an outbuildable page.

Avoid targeting pages from massive authority sites purely on domain strength, since your version may struggle to outrank them even if objectively better; instead prioritise mid-authority pages where content quality, not domain trust, is the limiting factor.

What 'better' actually means

Better is not simply longer. It means more current data, clearer structure, original examples, and answering follow-up questions the original left out. Read the top three ranking pages and the linking articles that reference them to see which specific gaps commenters or citing writers have pointed out, then explicitly close those gaps in your version.

  • Update statistics and examples to the current year
  • Add a section addressing a commonly asked follow-up question the original omits
  • Improve scannability with clearer headings, tables, and summary boxes
  • Include an original graphic or example the original lacks

Reaching the original's linkers

Once published, export the referring domains of the original page from RankLinks and filter for still-active sites with a working contact method. Pitch each one honestly: note the original resource they linked to, explain specifically what your version adds, and ask them to consider it as an additional or updated reference rather than demanding they remove the existing link.

Key takeaways

  • Target mid-authority pages where content quality is the limiting factor, not domain strength
  • Define 'better' with concrete gaps closed, not just extra word count
  • Export the original's linkers from RankLinks as your outreach list
  • Pitch as an additional resource, not a demand to swap the existing link

Why this lesson matters

This lesson belongs to Earning Links Through Assets, the part of Link Building Strategies where the goal is: create content designed from the outset to attract links without direct outreach.

Read it once, then do it straight away on a real site inside RankLinks. Nothing here is theory for its own sake — every step produces something you can show a client.

Do it now

  1. 1Open RankLinks with sample data already loaded, so you are not stuck on setup.
  2. 2Browse real placement inventory.
  3. 3Draft one linkable asset brief inside RankLinks' content planner this week.
