Google News is not the same as Google Search

Since 2019, publishers no longer need to submit a separate application to Google News — inclusion is largely automatic once a site meets Google's content policies and technical requirements, and articles can appear in the News tab, Top Stories carousel, and Google Discover through normal crawling and indexing. However, meeting the bar for appearing in these news-specific surfaces is stricter than ranking in regular web search, because Google applies additional quality and trust checks specific to news content.

The ecosystem has several distinct surfaces: the dedicated News tab, the Top Stories carousel embedded in regular search results, Google Discover's personalised feed, and the Google News app/website. A publisher can succeed in one surface and be invisible in another — Discover eligibility, for instance, has its own separate content policy on top of the general news content policy.

What determines whether an article surfaces at all

Crawlability and indexation are the baseline: if Googlebot cannot access and index the article quickly, none of the news-specific surfaces are possible. Beyond that, Google evaluates content policy compliance (no fabricated content, clear authorship, no deceptive practices), technical signals (structured data, sitemaps, page experience), and topical/quality signals that feed into ranking on the news-specific surfaces.

New publishers often expect a formal approval step; there isn't one anymore. The practical test is: does the article get crawled promptly, does it pass the automated policy checks, and does it meet the quality bar relative to other coverage of the same story. Fixing technical issues raises the ceiling; it doesn't guarantee any specific article appears.

  • No manual application needed since Google News's 2019 policy change
  • Distinct surfaces: News tab, Top Stories, Discover, News app
  • Crawlability and indexation speed are the non-negotiable baseline
  • Content policy compliance is checked automatically, continuously

Key takeaways

  • Google News inclusion is automatic, not an application process
  • Treat News tab, Top Stories and Discover as separate, distinct surfaces
  • Crawlability and fast indexation are prerequisites, not advantages
  • Content policy compliance is continuous, not a one-time check
