A Google News sitemap only includes articles published in the last 48 hours and uses the news-specific sitemap namespace with fields including publication name, publication date, and title, in addition to the URL. This is fundamentally different from a standard sitemap, which is meant to be a durable, comprehensive index of all URLs — the news sitemap is explicitly a rolling, short-lived feed.
Because it only covers 48 hours of content, the news sitemap must be regenerated automatically and continuously as new articles publish and older ones age out; a manually maintained news sitemap is not viable for any publisher with more than a handful of articles per day.
Implementation details that matter
The publication name in the sitemap must exactly match the name registered and consistently used across the site's branding — mismatches between the sitemap's publication tag and how the site actually presents its name can cause validation issues. Submit the news sitemap through Search Console alongside, not instead of, your standard sitemap, since the standard sitemap still matters for long-term indexation after the 48-hour news window closes.
Monitor sitemap health via Search Console's Sitemaps report specifically for errors on the news sitemap feed; a broken automated feed can silently stop submitting new content while the rest of the site continues indexing normally through regular crawling, delaying discovery of breaking articles by hours instead of minutes.
