The three-stage intent framework

Awareness-stage keywords describe the problem, not the solution — "how to reduce customer churn", "why is my invoicing process so slow" — and searchers here don't yet know products like yours exist. Evaluation-stage keywords name the category and compare options — "best churn prediction software", "[category] tools compared". Decision-stage keywords are close to a purchase — "[competitor] pricing", "[your product] reviews", "[competitor] alternative".

Each stage needs a different page type and a different call to action: awareness content earns an email signup or a soft follow, decision-stage content earns a demo request, and mismatching the two (a hard demo CTA on a top-of-funnel educational post) suppresses conversion by scaring off early-stage visitors.

Building the map

Start from your product's core use cases and list every problem each one solves, then expand each problem into its awareness, evaluation and decision variants using autocomplete, competitor content, and sales call transcripts if you have access to them — sales calls are an under-used goldmine of the exact phrases prospects use.

Tag every keyword in your research spreadsheet with its funnel stage and its intended destination page type before you write anything, so content briefs are assigned deliberately rather than opportunistically.

  • Awareness: problem-focused, no product or category names
  • Evaluation: category comparisons, "best X for Y", feature-specific searches
  • Decision: brand, competitor, pricing and review terms
  • Tag every keyword with funnel stage before writing a brief

Prioritising with RankTracker and RankWriter

Use RankTracker's keyword research view to pull search volume and difficulty for each cluster, but weight decision-stage terms higher than raw volume would suggest, since they convert at a far higher rate even with lower search volume than broad awareness terms.

Once priorities are set, hand each cluster to RankWriter as a content brief tagged with its funnel stage, so the tool's tone and CTA suggestions match evaluation or decision intent rather than defaulting to generic blog-style output.

Key takeaways

  • Split every keyword list into awareness, evaluation and decision stages
  • Mine sales call transcripts for real buyer phrasing
  • Match CTA intensity to funnel stage — no hard demo CTAs on top-of-funnel posts
  • Weight decision-stage keywords above raw search volume when prioritising

Why this lesson matters

This lesson belongs to B2B Fundamentals, the part of SaaS & B2B SEO where the goal is: understand how b2b buyer psychology and long sales cycles change seo strategy versus consumer sites.

Read it once, then do it straight away on a real site inside RankTracker. Nothing here is theory for its own sake — every step produces something you can show a client.

Do it now

  1. 1Open RankTracker with sample data already loaded, so you are not stuck on setup.
  2. 2Track the keywords from this lesson.
  3. 3In RankTracker, group your existing keyword list into awareness/evaluation/decision stages and flag any stage with fewer than five tracked terms.
