Click depth report
The link structure visualisation
The analyser renders an interactive node graph of the crawled site, with nodes sized by number of inbound internal links. Zooming and filtering by URL pattern lets you inspect how well specific sections, such as a blog or a product category, are interlinked.
- Node size reflects inbound internal links
- Filter by URL pattern to inspect a section
Finding orphan pages
Switch to the Orphans tab to see pages the crawler only reached via the sitemap, with no internal links pointing to them. These pages often receive little organic value since search engines rely heavily on internal links to discover and rank content.
- Orphans tab lists sitemap-only pages
- These typically underperform without internal links
Click depth report
The click depth report shows how many clicks from the homepage each page sits at. Pages beyond four clicks deep are flagged as "deep", since deep pages are crawled and refreshed less frequently by search engines.
Anchor text overview
A separate anchor text tab aggregates the anchor text used across internal links, helping you spot over-reliance on generic phrases like "click here" instead of descriptive, keyword-relevant anchors.
Why this matters
A well-optimised internal link structure significantly influences how search engines understand your site's topical relevance and authority distribution. Neglecting this aspect can lead to critical pages being undervalued, struggling to rank despite strong content, or even being indexed less frequently. Conversely, strategic internal linking amplifies the authority of core content, helping search engines recognise your site's expertise and improving discoverability for users and crawlers alike, directly impacting organic visibility and traffic.
Consider an e-commerce site where category pages for high-margin products receive minimal internal linking from blog posts or supporting product guides. Despite these blog posts attracting substantial organic traffic, the link equity generated is poorly distributed, failing to elevate the target category pages. This misstep means valuable authority is essentially 'trapped', preventing these critical commercial pages from achieving their full ranking potential, illustrating a missed opportunity directly attributable to a suboptimal internal linking strategy.
Identifying Internal Link Bloat
Internal Link Bloat occurs when an excessive number of links point to a single page, or when many pages link out indiscriminately, diluting the value passed through each link. While linking to important content is crucial, over-linking within a small content cluster, or adding numerous boilerplate links in footers and sidebars, can reduce the efficacy of individual links. RankAudit allows you to scrutinise these patterns, highlighting pages with unusually high inbound or outbound internal link counts, enabling you to assess if these connections genuinely contribute to topical relevance and authority flow.
The impact of link bloat is two-fold: it can obscure the true hierarchical importance of pages to search engines, and it can reduce the 'PageRank sculpting' potential of your internal links, as the value transmitted per link diminishes. By identifying and rectifying instances of internal link bloat, you ensure that every internal link is meaningful, directing authority precisely where it's needed most and reinforcing the intended architecture of your site. This precision helps search engines better understand your site's structure and prioritise content effectively.
- Analyse pages with 100+ inbound internal links; are they all truly canonical and important?
- Review template-level links (e.g., footers, sidebars) for excessive, non-contextual broad site links.
- Check for pages linking to the same target page multiple times within a single content block.
- Assess if low-value pages are disproportionately receiving internal links that could be better directed.
Do it now
Navigate to the 'Internal Link Reports' section within RankAudit and locate the 'Pages by Inbound Links' and 'Pages by Outbound Links' tables. Sort both reports in descending order to quickly identify any pages at the extreme ends of the internal linking spectrum, which are often indicators of either critical content or potential link bloat issues requiring further investigation.
- Open your active RankAudit project.
- Click on 'Internal Link Reports' in the left navigation.
- Find and click on 'Pages by Inbound Links'.
- Sort the 'Inbound Links' column from highest to lowest.
Key takeaways
- ✓Use the node graph to spot under-linked sections visually
- ✓Add internal links to orphan pages found in the Orphans tab
- ✓Bring deep pages closer to the homepage via navigation or hub pages
- ✓Review anchor text patterns to reduce generic anchor usage
