Finding and suppressing duplicates

Citation Building: Get Listed Everywhere That Matters: citation builder to Submitting to a directory to Finding and suppressing duplicates.

The citation builder

Citations → Build Citations lists core directories relevant to your business category and country, each with a status: Not Submitted, Pending, Live or Rejected, so you can see coverage at a glance before adding anything new.

Submitting to a directory

Selecting a Not Submitted directory opens a pre-filled form using your master NAP record and category, which you review and submit directly from RankLocal where the directory supports it, or export as a ready-made submission pack where it doesn't.

Finding and suppressing duplicates

The Duplicate Scan sub-tab searches each connected directory for existing listings that don't match your current record — old addresses, previous business names — and flags them for merging or closure rather than leaving two competing listings live.

  • Duplicate Scan surfaces old or conflicting listings per directory
  • Merge where the directory supports claiming both records
  • Request closure where merging isn't possible

Prioritising which directories matter

Not every directory carries equal weight — the builder marks a handful as 'core' for your category, and these should be completed before working through the longer tail of niche or regional directories beneath them.

Why this matters

Consistent and accurate citation data across the web is a foundational ranking factor for local SEO. Discrepancies, such as variations in company name, address, or phone number (NAP), confuse search engine algorithms and diminish trust signals. This directly impacts a business's ability to rank in the local pack and organic results, as search engines struggle to confidently verify its existence and legitimacy. Consequently, even a perfectly optimised website may struggle to gain visibility if its foundational local data is fragmented or incorrect.

Consider a plumbing business with conflicting phone numbers on Google Business Profile, Yelp, and a dozen other directories. When a potential customer searches for 'emergency plumber near me', Google's algorithm may downgrade this business due to the unreliable NAP signals. This results in missed opportunities and reduced lead generation, directly impacting revenue. By diligently managing citations with RankLocal, you ensure a unified, trustworthy digital footprint, reinforcing your business's authority and improving its local search performance considerably.

Prioritising Correction of High-Impact NAP Discrepancies

While all citation errors are detrimental, those found on high-authority directories or platforms with direct local pack influence warrant immediate attention. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, and industry-specific aggregators carry significant weight. Prioritise fixing inaccuracies on these platforms first, as their data often propagates to other, smaller directories. RankLocal's health score provides an initial indicator, but a manual review of critical sources is essential to identify the most impactful discrepancies for immediate remediation.

A common mistake is treating all citation errors with equal urgency. A minor error on a low-traffic, niche directory, while still needing correction, should not divert resources from a critical inconsistency on Google Business Profile that directly impacts local pack visibility. Develop a tiered approach to correction, addressing the most authoritative and widely-indexed platforms first. This strategic focus ensures that your efforts yield the maximum SEO benefit in the shortest timeframe, bolstering your core local presence effectively.

  • Focus on Google Business Profile (GBP) as the primary source of truth.
  • Identify and correct NAP differences on top-tier directories (Yelp, Apple Maps).
  • Check industry-specific aggregators that feed many smaller sites.
  • Prioritise phone number and address inconsistencies over minor name variations.

Do it now

Immediately navigate to the 'Citations' tab within RankLocal for your primary client or business profile. Review the 'Health Score' and scroll through the 'Detected Citations' list. Your objective is to identify any glaring NAP inconsistencies highlighted by the tool, or any surprisingly low scores on directories you know to be significant. This initial audit will provide a concrete starting point for your citation optimisation strategy, focusing your efforts where they are most needed.

  • Log in to RankLocal and select your target profile.
  • Click on the 'Citations' tab in the left navigation.
  • Note your current 'Health Score'.
  • Scroll through 'Detected Citations' and identify the top 5 directories with errors.

Key takeaways

  • Check current coverage status before submitting anything new
  • Use the pre-filled forms so every submission matches your master NAP record exactly
  • Run the duplicate scan before building new citations, not after
  • Complete core directories for your category before the long tail

Do it now

Connect a profile and understand the health score before making changes. Audit the local footprint.
