The profile completeness panel
Under Overview → Profile, a completeness bar breaks down primary category, secondary categories, services, attributes, hours, description and photos, with a percentage and a red flag next to anything missing or thin.
Categories and services
Primary category has the single biggest weight in the score. RankLocal suggests alternative categories based on what top-ranking competitors use, visible in a side panel when you click Edit Category.
Services should list every distinct offering with its own short description rather than a single generic line — thin service lists are flagged even if a category is correctly set.
- Primary category — highest-weighted single field
- Secondary categories — add all genuinely relevant ones
- Services — one entry with description per offering, not a single line
Photos and posts
The Photos sub-tab flags a low photo count and missing categories of photo (exterior, interior, team, product) separately, since profiles with a spread across categories perform better than ones with many photos of only one type.
Fixing flagged fields
Every red flag links directly to the relevant Google Business Profile edit screen through RankLocal's connected sync, so fixes made here push back to the live profile without switching tools.
Why this matters
A meticulously managed Google Business Profile (GBP), actively monitored through RankLocal's health score, directly correlates with enhanced local search visibility and customer engagement. Consider a small electrical contractor whose GBP consistently shows a 95%+ health score, indicating robust category selection, complete service listings, regular photo uploads, and prompt review responses. This contractor frequently ranks in the local 3-pack for high-intent queries like "electrician near me," securing a steady stream of new leads without significant ad spend, simply by maintaining their profile's integrity and relevance as flagged by RankLocal.
Conversely, a competitor with a lacklustre GBP, reporting a 40% health score due to missing business hours, an outdated address, and dormant posts, effectively cedes market share. Despite offering superior services, this business struggles to appear in local searches, resulting in missed calls and lost opportunities. RankLocal's health score acts as an indispensable diagnostic tool, highlighting critical areas for improvement that, if ignored, lead to diminished local search performance and a direct impact on revenue. Prioritising profile completeness ensures your business maximises its organic reach in geographically targeted searches.
Prioritising Flagged Fields: Impact vs. Effort
When RankLocal flags multiple fields as incomplete or suboptimal, it can be tempting to address them in an arbitrary order. However, an effective strategy involves prioritising fixes based on their potential impact on local search performance and the effort required for implementation. High-impact, low-effort changes, such as correcting an outdated phone number or adding a missing business description, should always be tackled first. These quick wins often yield immediate improvements in profile completeness and user experience, which Google's algorithm values.
Subsequently, focus on high-impact, medium-effort tasks, such as expanding your service list with detailed descriptions or uploading a series of geotagged photos. While these require more time, their contribution to ranking signals and user engagement is substantial. Avoid getting bogged down by low-impact, high-effort tasks initially, unless all other critical areas are addressed. RankLocal's detailed flagging system empowers you to make these strategic decisions, ensuring your optimisation efforts are both efficient and effective in driving tangible local SEO results.
Here's a strategic approach to prioritisation:
Prioritise fields directly influencing core entity data (address, phone, hours).
Address primary category accuracy before secondary categories.
Focus on adding complete service descriptions over minor attribute adjustments.
Regularly review and respond to new reviews before deep-diving into historical photo audits.
