Mission

Mission Optimise an Existing Video and Launch a New One

A capstone project applying this track's principles to two videos: a retention-and-metadata overhaul of an existing underperformer, and a fully optimised new upload from scratch.

Part 1: rescue an underperforming video

Choose an existing video with reasonable topic relevance but weak performance and diagnose it using the retention graph and traffic-source breakdown covered earlier in this track - identify whether the primary problem is a CTR issue (weak thumbnail/title), a retention issue (slow start or unfocused middle), or a discovery issue (poor keyword match or isolated topic with no supporting playlist).

Apply the specific fix for whichever problem you diagnosed: a new thumbnail and title test for CTR issues, a re-edit or at minimum an improved chapter structure for retention issues, or a metadata and playlist rewrite for discovery issues. Don't apply all three blindly - target the actual diagnosed cause.

Part 2: launch a fully optimised new video

Using the keyword research method from earlier lessons, choose a topic with validated search demand and a beatable top-10, script it using the hook-loop-payoff structure, and produce a thumbnail following the CTR design principles covered in this track. Add chapters, write a keyword-natural description, and add cards and an end screen pointing to your most relevant existing video.

If relevant to your niche, produce a short-form adaptation for at least one other platform rather than a direct re-upload, applying the platform-specific pacing and hook adjustments from the multi-platform lesson.

  • 1. Diagnose the underperforming video's actual bottleneck before editing anything
  • 2. Apply the targeted fix (thumbnail/title, retention edit, or metadata/playlist)
  • 3. Research and validate a new topic with real search demand
  • 4. Script with hook-loop-payoff, produce a tested thumbnail
  • 5. Add chapters, description, cards, end screen
  • 6. Adapt a short-form version if relevant to your niche

Measuring the outcome

Benchmark both videos in RankTracker before making changes and again two to four weeks after, tracking CTR, average percentage viewed, and ranking position for your target keyword. A successful mission shows measurable movement in the specific metric tied to whatever you diagnosed and fixed - vague overall improvement without a traceable cause means the diagnosis, not just the fix, needs revisiting.

Key takeaways

  • Diagnose the actual bottleneck before applying any fix
  • Apply the fix targeted to the diagnosis, not a blanket set of changes
  • Build the new video using validated keyword research and hook-loop-payoff scripting
  • Benchmark before and after in RankTracker to confirm measurable improvement
