Citations and Local Content

Local Landing Pages Rank for City and Suburb Keywords

For businesses serving multiple areas, dedicated local landing pages let you rank for each specific location rather than relying on one generic page to cover them all.

When a dedicated local page is justified

Build a dedicated local landing page for an area when there is genuine, meaningful search volume for that location, when you can write genuinely unique and locally specific content for it (not a templated page with only the place name swapped), and when the area represents a real part of your service area or customer base. Building pages purely to occupy more search real estate without real local specificity produces the same thin-content risk covered in programmatic SEO.

A single service-area business might justify five to fifteen local pages for its core operating suburbs; a larger regional or national business with actual physical locations in each city needs one dedicated page per real location at minimum.

What makes a local page genuinely unique, not templated

Include specific local details that could not apply to any other page in the set: named local landmarks or areas within that suburb your team regularly works in, specific local customer examples or testimonials from that area, local phone number if you use area-specific numbers, embedded map centred on that specific area, and locally relevant considerations (a plumbing page for a coastal suburb might mention corrosion from sea air, which would not belong on an inland suburb's page).

Avoid the common failure pattern where twenty local pages are identical apart from the suburb name in the title and one sentence — this is easily detected as thin, duplicate content and typically fails to rank any of the pages meaningfully, since search engines struggle to justify indexing near-duplicate pages competing with each other.

  • Named local landmarks or areas genuinely served within that suburb
  • Local customer examples or testimonials specific to that area
  • Area-specific practical considerations relevant to the service
  • Embedded map centred on the specific service area
  • Unique title, meta description and at least 300-400 words of unique copy

Structuring and internally linking local pages

Organise local pages under a clear URL and navigation structure — a locations hub page linking to each city or suburb page — so both users and search engines can understand the full scope of the service area at a glance, mirroring the pillar-and-spoke structure covered in content strategy. Link relevant blog content and case studies into the corresponding local page where genuinely relevant.

Use RankLocal's local page generator to scaffold each page with the correct structural elements and schema (covered in a later lesson) while requiring manual entry of the genuinely unique local content sections, keeping the efficiency of a template without falling into the thin-content trap.

Key takeaways

  • Only build a local page where genuine volume and local specificity both exist
  • Include area-specific details that could not apply to any other page
  • Organise pages under a locations hub with clear internal linking
  • Use a template for structure only, never for the unique content sections
