Where the numbers come from
The Metrics tab on a site profile pulls domain authority and referring domains from third-party backlink indexes, refreshed roughly monthly, while organic traffic is estimated from search visibility data. None of these are Google's own numbers, so treat them as directional.
DA and DR are not interchangeable
RankLinks displays both a Domain Authority-style score and a Domain Rating-style score side by side because they're calculated differently and can disagree, sometimes sharply, on the same site.
When the two scores diverge by a wide margin, open the Referring Domains breakdown beneath them — a large gap often means a link profile built from low-quality bulk placements rather than organic authority.
Traffic quality over volume
The traffic estimate chart can be expanded to show the top traffic-driving keywords for the site. If the majority of estimated traffic sits on branded or unrelated terms, the number is inflated relative to real topical authority.
- Check the traffic-by-keyword breakdown before trusting the headline number
- Watch for a sudden spike followed by a flat line — often a one-off PR mention
- Prefer steady traffic over spiky traffic even at a lower headline figure
Spam score as a veto
Spam score sits at the bottom of the Metrics tab and functions as a veto rather than a tie-breaker: a high spam score should rule a site out regardless of how attractive the other numbers look.
Why this matters
Misinterpreting website metrics on RankLinks can lead to significant resource misallocation. For example, selecting a publisher solely based on a high Domain Rating (DR) without scrutinising traffic quality or relevance could result in acquiring a link from a site that receives substantial bot traffic or has an audience completely unrelated to your niche. This directly impacts the effectiveness of your outreach budget, yielding minimal, if any, organic search benefit and potentially exposing your brand to low-value association.
Conversely, a nuanced understanding of these metrics enables strategic decision-making. By cross-referencing a moderate DR with steadily increasing organic traffic, a low spam score, and relevant audience demographics, you can identify genuinely valuable link opportunities that might be overlooked by competitors focusing solely on top-line numbers. This precision maximises the ROI of your link building efforts, ensuring each acquired link contributes meaningfully to improved rankings and targeted referral traffic.
Prioritising Traffic Relevance Over Raw Volume
When evaluating a potential publisher within RankLinks, it is crucial to look beyond the raw traffic volume figure. A site reporting 100,000 monthly visits might seem impressive, but if those visitors are predominantly interested in a topic entirely unrelated to your client's business, the value of a link from that domain diminishes significantly. Instead, focus on the keywords driving that traffic and the audience demographics, which RankLinks provides, to ascertain alignment with your target market. A smaller, highly engaged, and relevant audience is invariably more valuable than a vast, disconnected one.
To effectively prioritise relevance, consider the publisher's content strategy and how it aligns with your client's offerings. If RankLinks shows a publisher's top-performing content is consistently on topics adjacent to your client's niche, even if their overall traffic is lower than a competitor, that publisher represents a higher-quality opportunity. This diagnostic approach prevents chasing vanity metrics and ensures every outreach effort targets an audience genuinely receptive to your message, leading to better conversion rates and stronger SEO signals.
- Examine the 'Top Keywords' section for thematic match.
- Cross-reference 'Traffic Origin' to understand audience geography.
- Assess 'Content Categories' for direct industry relevance.
- Filter publishers by niche interest, not just global popularity.
Do it now
Navigate to your active 'Campaigns' within RankLinks and select an ongoing order. Open the publisher's listing details for the proposed placement and immediately apply the combined metric evaluation process. Do not approve the order based on a single metric; instead, cross-reference DR with traffic quality and spam score to make an informed decision before proceeding with the transaction.
- Navigate to 'My Orders' in RankLinks.
- Select an order awaiting approval.
- Click on the publisher's website URL to view detailed metrics.
- Review DR, Organic Traffic, and Spam Score holistically before approving or declining.
Key takeaways
- ✓Treat DA and DR as directional, third-party estimates, not ground truth
- ✓Investigate large gaps between DA and DR via the referring domains breakdown
- ✓Check the keyword-level traffic breakdown before trusting a traffic number
- ✓Use spam score as a hard veto, not just another metric to average in
