Stage 1
Project switcher
Stage 2
Global date range
Stage 3
Search and notifications
Project switcher
The dropdown in the top-left switches between projects without leaving the current tab context, so if you are on Rankings in Project A you land on Rankings in Project B — useful for agencies checking the same view across clients.
Global date range
The date picker in the header applies to every chart on the page you are viewing. Setting it once at the top saves resetting the range on each individual widget, and it persists as you move between tabs in the same session.
- Set the date range once per session
- Use custom ranges to match report periods
Search and notifications
The header search jumps straight to a keyword across the whole project, skipping pagination in the rankings table. The bell icon surfaces ranking alerts, scheduled report completions and credit-usage warnings in one feed.
Keyboard shortcuts
Power users can press '/' to focus search from anywhere, and 'g' then 'r' to jump to Rankings. These are listed in the help menu if you forget them.
Why this matters
Neglecting these header features can severely hamper your daily productivity within RankTracker, turning routine tasks into time-consuming trawls through irrelevant data. Imagine needing to quickly verify ranking fluctuations for a specific set of high-value keywords across multiple projects. Without adept use of the project switcher, precise date ranges, and advanced search filters, you're left manually navigating, copying, and comparing, which is inefficient and prone to error. This inefficiency accumulates, diverting valuable time from strategic analysis to mere data retrieval.
Conversely, mastering these controls empowers you to rapidly isolate critical information, facilitating quicker decision-making. For instance, a sudden drop in rankings for a client's core product pages might trigger an immediate need to filter by 'brand keywords' within a 'last 7 days' date range, across their primary and secondary projects. The ability to execute this precise query in seconds, rather than minutes, means you can identify the scope of the problem and begin formulating a response while the data is still fresh, ultimately enhancing your responsiveness and strategic impact.
Prioritising Data Visibility for Urgent Tasks
A common mistake is treating the global search and filter options as secondary tools, only used when data volume becomes overwhelming. Instead, consider them primary navigators, enabling immediate access to the most pertinent subsets of your ranking data. When faced with an urgent query – for example, investigating a competitor's sudden SERP dominance for a specific keyword cluster – you should instinctively reach for these controls to narrow your focus. This proactive approach prevents information overload and ensures that initial diagnostic efforts are directed efficiently.
Effective prioritisation of data visibility involves more than just entering keywords; it demands an understanding of how to combine filters strategically. For a critical site migration, monitoring specific URL patterns within a custom date range immediately post-launch is paramount. Similarly, for a content refresh, filtering by keyword tags related to a content hub, combined with a comparison against the previous month, provides instant insight into performance shifts. This layered filtering approach is crucial for cutting through noise and extracting actionable intelligence rapidly.
To optimise data visibility for urgent tasks:
Always define your specific objective before applying any search or filter.
Combine keyword search with date ranges for immediate performance snapshots.
Utilise advanced filters (e.g., Tag, URL, SERP Features) to pinpoint exact data segments.
Save frequently used filter combinations for quick recall using browser bookmarks or external notes.
Do it now
Practise using the header controls by navigating to one of your existing RankTracker projects. Apply a filter that narrows the ranking data to a specific keyword tag you've previously set up, and then adjust the date range to 'Last 30 Days'. Finally, use the search bar to locate a specific keyword within this filtered view, observing how quickly you can hone in on precise data points across the various ranking reports.
- Select an existing project using the project switcher.
- Navigate to the 'Rankings' report.
- Apply a keyword tag filter to refine the displayed data.
- Adjust the global date range to 'Last 30 Days' or 'Custom range'.
