Position distribution

The Overview Dashboard: Read Your SEO Performance at a Glance: visibility chart to Top movers panel to Position distribution.

The visibility chart

The top panel plots a single visibility score over time, aggregating every tracked keyword's position and search volume into one line. It is the fastest way to answer 'are we winning?' without scanning a table.

Hover any point to see the exact score and date; click the date range selector to compare last 7, 30 or 90 days, or a custom window that matches a campaign.

Top movers panel

Below the chart sit two lists: biggest gains and biggest losses over the selected period. Each row shows the keyword, position change and a link straight into Keyword Detail, so you can investigate a drop without hunting through the full rankings table.

  • Click a mover to open its Keyword Detail page
  • Sort by volume-weighted change to prioritise commercial terms

Position distribution

A stacked bar shows how many keywords sit in positions 1-3, 4-10, 11-20 and beyond. Watching this shift right to left over months is a cleaner health check than average position alone, which one outlier can distort.

Quick actions

The dashboard header carries shortcuts to add keywords, add competitors and generate a report, so routine tasks never require a detour through settings menus.

Why this matters

Neglecting the Overview Dashboard's daily review risks missing critical shifts in your keyword performance. For instance, a sudden dip in the visibility trend, left unaddressed, could indicate a core technical issue or a competitor making significant gains. Without this early warning, your team might invest resources into less impactful SEO tasks, such as content creation for already ranking terms, while a crucial problem erodes your organic traffic. Proactive monitoring here ensures swift diagnosis and targeted intervention, preventing minor issues from escalating into major organic search revenue losses.

Conversely, effectively utilising this dashboard empowers you to rapidly capitalise on opportunities. Imagine observing an unexpected surge in your position distribution for a cluster of commercial keywords. This could signal a new content piece resonating well, or perhaps a competitor's algorithm update benefiting your site. Prompt identification allows you to immediately amplify this success – perhaps by boosting internal linking to these pages, optimising their metadata further, or even launching a related PPC campaign to capture more market share. The dashboard is your strategic compass, guiding daily tactical decisions.

Prioritising Follow-Up Actions from the Overview

The Overview Dashboard serves as a high-level diagnostic, prompting deeper investigation. While the visibility chart and top movers provide immediate signals, the true value lies in translating these insights into actionable tasks. A sharp decline in visibility, for example, demands immediate attention to the 'Lost' top movers, followed by a deeper dive into their specific landing pages, search intent, and technical health. Conversely, significant gains among 'New' or 'Improved' terms warrant a review to understand the drivers of success and identify opportunities for replication or further optimisation.

Effective use of the overview involves a decision-making matrix. Not every movement necessitates a full-scale audit. Small fluctuations are normal noise. Focus on significant shifts, particularly those affecting high-volume or high-commercial-intent keywords. The goal is to triage the most impactful issues or opportunities first, using the dashboard as a filter to prevent analysis paralysis. Learn to recognise patterns: a simultaneous drop across many keywords might suggest a sitewide technical problem, whereas isolated drops could point to specific content decay or competitor movements.

Prioritise follow-up when:

A key money-making keyword enters the 'Lost' panel.

Overall visibility shows a sustained downward trend over 7 days.

The 'Improved' panel highlights new keywords ranking 1-3.

A significant portion of your keywords shift from page 1 to page 2.

Do it now

To internalise the flow from overview to action, immediately access your RankTracker project's Overview Dashboard and identify one specific trend or panel that warrants further investigation. Do not just observe; formulate a hypothesis about its cause and identify the next specific report or tab you would navigate to within RankTracker to validate or disprove that hypothesis.

  • Open your RankTracker project.
  • Locate the 'Visibility Trend' chart.
  • Identify the most significant rise or fall in the last 7 or 30 days.
  • Mentally note which other RankTracker report you would check next (e.g., 'Keywords' tab with filters) to investigate this change.

Key takeaways

  • Use the visibility score as your single headline metric
  • Check top movers before opening the full table
  • Track position distribution shifting toward top positions over time
  • Use dashboard shortcuts for routine tasks instead of digging through menus
