Join the AcademyWhy competitor gaps are a shortcut
A competitor ranking is evidence that a page appeared for a query in the observed context, not proof that you can reproduce its result. Gap analysis helps find questions you may have missed; each candidate still needs business relevance, an intent check and a useful contribution you can support.
Choose search competitors that serve overlapping audience needs, including specialist sites as well as larger brands. Record why each is relevant and compare the actual ranking pages, not only a domain-level authority estimate.
Running the gap report
Compare available keyword sets for your site and relevant competitors using the same provider, market, device and date where possible. Third-party lists are sampled, not complete inventories. If your site is absent from a report, label the query 'not observed in this dataset', not 'never ranks'.
Record the competitor URL, observed query/position, your relevant URL and missing evidence. Filter or sort by intent, relevance and available demand, then inspect current results before committing work. Position cut-offs may help review a list but are your screening choices, not universal opportunity thresholds.
Separating real opportunity from noise
Do not target irrelevant offerings or create misleading pages to capture a rival's brand demand. An accurate comparison may be useful if you can substantiate it. Prioritise a real audience problem and an answer your business can deliver; an outdated competitor page or low KD alone does not make the gap easy.
- Exclude brand demand unless an honest, relevant comparison serves the visitor
- Discard: terms tied to features you don't sell
- Prioritise: relevant needs with a useful, supportable contribution
- Investigate: unanswered questions or genuinely inaccurate information
- Estimate effort and record uncertainty before scheduling work
Keep a gap decision and measurement record
Use available competitor keyword reports or a comparison worksheet to keep the source evidence and your decision together. Assign a proposed URL, owner and next action to accepted gaps, then monitor selected terms in RankTracker. Compare consistent checks over time and record unavailable data honestly; publishing a page does not confirm a gap has closed.
Why this lesson matters
Competitor reports can uncover relevant needs your pages do not yet answer. A rival appearing in a dataset does not prove that you can reproduce its ranking or that your site never appears.
Prioritise evidence-backed gaps
Compare consistent market and provider contexts, inspect the actual competitor page and identify a useful contribution you can substantiate. Choose between improving an existing page and creating a distinct resource based on the visitor task, not the size of the raw gap list.
- Record observed query, competitor URL and source/date.
- Exclude irrelevant offerings and misleading brand targeting.
- Estimate effort and document missing evidence.
- Assign an owner and retest plan to accepted work.
Do it now
Review an available competitor report or a manually evidenced comparison worksheet.
- Keep absent queries labelled not observed in this dataset.
- Inspect the current results in the intended market.
- Write why your proposed page would help the audience.
- Select a manageable set to monitor; leave missing metrics unavailable.
Key takeaways
- Pick competitors matched to your actual size and authority
- Filter for terms they rank for and you don't, then prioritise by winnability
- Discard branded and off-offering terms from the gap list
- Track gap closure over time as a programme metric, not a one-off report
Practise it now in RankTracker
Use a relevant seed, public question sources and available search evidence to prepare a reviewed candidate list. Record sources and missing data, group related needs and propose useful target pages without a fixed keyword quota.
