Google selects featured snippets automatically

Google’s systems decide whether a page makes a suitable featured snippet for a query. You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet, and Google does not document a universal top-ten eligibility rule or a required answer length. Clear structure supports readers; it does not guarantee selection.

  • Use a paragraph for a direct explanation when appropriate
  • Use ordered steps only when the process has a genuine sequence
  • Use accessible tables for real comparable data
  • Treat video results and chapters as distinct search features, not a guaranteed text snippet format

Inspect what is actually shown

Record the query, engine, market, language, device and date, then note whether a snippet or question feature appears and which source URL is shown. Features change across contexts; a single observation is not permanent ownership.

Review accuracy, completeness and usability. Improve your page only when you have a better answer you can support, not merely to imitate another page’s formatting. A competitor’s low domain score is not proof that a snippet is easy to acquire.

Keep PAA, FAQ markup and AI features distinct

People Also Ask questions can inform useful sections, but neither question headings nor FAQ structured data guarantee a PAA appearance. Google limits FAQ rich-result availability to well-known authoritative government and health sites; do not promise general FAQ rich results for ordinary commercial pages.

AI Overviews and other search features are different experiences. Established SEO fundamentals still apply, and there is no special AI schema requirement. Do not relabel a feature observation as proof of AI visibility or a fixed organic position.

Measure observations rather than claiming wins

Use RankSearch or manual inspection to record the source actually displayed in the intended context. Use RankTracker for the available position checks; report feature presence or ownership only when real returned evidence supports it.

Recheck after meaningful updates and record the result, including absence or unavailable data. A feature appearance does not prove increased clicks or conversions; compare Search Console and appropriate outcome evidence separately.
